Colic Relief Measures for Infants

April 29th, 2009

Colic is a condition that affects many infants and new mothers find this especially worrisome since, most of the time, it is very difficult to console a colicky baby. Most doctors say this is a developmental phase of infancy and that babies eventually outgrow it. Some people will ask the question about colic relief. While this information is helpful, it doesn’t do much to alleviate a mother’s anxiety. However, there are some colic relief measures that you can do to help soothe your baby.

What is Colic?

Colic is a condition – not really a disease or ailment – that is accompanied by the following symptoms:

Nonstop crying

Gas

Grimacing

Baby pulling and extending his legs

Remedies for Colic

There is no single procedure or medication that can get rid of colic, and what works and what doesn’t usually vary with each baby. There is no definite answer on baby colic relief. Although there isn’t a cure for this condition, colic relief isn’t impossible to achieve as there are several ways of alleviating the symptoms associated with it.

Gripe Water. Gripe water is popular among mothers because it has often been found successful in soothing colic symptoms. Moreover, mothers are confident of using this product as it is made of natural ingredients. Gripe water can be administered as a standalone solution or if you’re having trouble giving it to your baby, you can mix it in with milk.

Probiotics. Probiotics have also been found to be successful in providing colic relief. Probiotics are bacteria that help the digestive system function properly.

Infant Massage. You can find some answers on colicky baby relief online today. Some mothers find that massaging their infants help relieve colic. It calms babies down and helps their bodies release gas, which is one of the culprits of colic.

Burping. Burping your baby is beneficial because it prevents gas build-up inside your baby’s stomach. Babies should be burped after every feeding. If possible, interrupt the feeding sessions for a couple of minutes to try and burp the baby.

Soothing Your Baby

When all else fail, you can always turn to good old soothing techniques to help your baby feel better. Movement is said to provide relief from the symptoms of colic. Try walking back and forth across the room while gently rocking your baby. Another way to provide colic relief is to take your baby for a quick ride. Not only does this help soothe the baby, it will help relax you, as well.

Some mothers play soft music or sing to their babies. You can also try rubbing your baby’s back as this also helps calm him down.
